Beware the 6.6kW !

A 6.6kW solar system is the most commonly advertised size, and therefore often requested. But why is this the case? Let’s take a look.

Warning ... maths ahead !

Surely all homes are different, and all homes need different sizes of solar system?

Of course, this is true.

There are a few arbitrary numerical limits involved.

It begins with the power company. Most power companies limit the “grid connection” to 5kW on a single phase home, and most homes are single phase. Because of this, the easy option is to install a 5kW inverter as the hub of your solar system.

From there, there’s a limit to the number of panels you can install on a 5kW inverter, as per the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator, who regulates the environmental funding of the system. This is so people don’t flaunt the regulations by installing an unrealistic number of panels on the 5kW inverter. The maximum number of solar panels on an inverter is 1/3 more than the inverter rating. IE, 5kW + 1/3 is 6.66kW.

Do you have to adhere to the above? Yes, but no.

Note that a 6.66kW system produces around 26 kWh per day of energy in Sydney (24 kWh in Melbourne and 28 kWh in Brisbane), which may be a lot more, or a lot less, than what you want.

Can you install less? Yes, of course. On a small home this 6.66kW system will export heaps of power to the grid for a very small return, especially in summer. You may be better advised to install a smaller system, of higher quality, instead of a larger one.

Can you install more? Yes, absolutely.

So long as you limit your grid connection to 5kW. Sometimes this feature adds a chunk to the expense because it needs additional monitoring, but at SkyGreen we have a great solution to that. Our large format GE brand inverters have built-in ‘export limiting’ which means you can easily and legally install their 8.5kW inverter onto your home and limit the export to 5kW, without adding the expensive metering. And with the 1/3 rule above, this means you can have 11.3kW, or even a massive 13.3kW on your roof if you use the 10kW model.
